Island Roadway, Tresco, 1957 Ink and pencil on paper Signed & dated lower centre 34 x 28 cm
Notes: I owe my first visit in 1945 to the Isles of Scilly solely to the enthusiasm and help of my good friends Julian Trevelyan and John Wells. I was accompanied then by Lucian Freud.
Tresio was where Lucian & I stayed full board with a Mrs Locke for £2 10/- a week. This marvelleous island was a pocket hankercheif principality with the raging Atlantic on three sides. It was visually an instant delight far from urban London.
Every rock, fisherman's cottage, wind blown tree, gorse fringed track & luch meadowhad a strong poetic presence. I became focused on these many elements, emblematic of the sources of extensive waiting & asking to be distiled into drawings and paintings.
