Notes: This large Seated Couple was installed in Berkeley Square during our recent exhibition. It is a pivotal later work, developing Chadwick's earliest theme; the precise juxtaposition of male and female figures. As with all Chadwick's couples, there is a perfectly described balance in the sculptural form - essential to evoke the inherent tension that is fundamental to the work.
These couples, sometimes organically joined such as Conjunction XVIII, never appear to be totally intimate. There is a distance in the gaze, an aloofness in the body language. However the single figures have an independence and self- confidence - especially the walking figures such as Maquette III High Wind. Uniquely in these, the artist uses the effect of the wind to define and dramatise the movement of the figure.
Chadwick's death earlier this year at the age of eighty-nine brought to an end a remarkable career spanning almost sixty years. We will continue to champion his work and plan an exhibition of his early sculpture for next year. POA CONTACT GALLERY
