The department for Modern and Contemporary Indian Art was launched in February 2005 with the preview of a Saffronart auction of 45 paintings by nine of the leading artists from the Progressive Group. The gallery stocks paintings by these artists, and many others. A programme of exhibitions began in June 2005 with S.H.Raza, followed by Manu Parekh in July, and Krishen Khanna in October. Many exhibitions have followed, with an extensive programme covering both the most inportant artists from the modernist group and also the next generation including the work of G. R. Iranna, Manisha Parekh and Jagannath Panda.
The gallery now represents the estate of Avinash Chandra and several exhibitions and museum shows are planned.
