SELECTED EXHIBITION

Osborne Samuel are delighted to welcome back George Dannatt to the gallery for an exhibition of his recent paintings and a selection of early works. This is the first exhibition of his work we have had since the retrospective held at the gallery in 2005. Since then, George has developed a tremendous body of new paintings.

George Dannatt is a former chartered surveyor and music critic who began painting in the 1950s. His work owes a great deal to the Cornish artists of St Ives such as Patrick Heron whom he knew and with whom he painted. However his tendency towards ordered geometry and clean lines leads one to make more of a comparison with the constructive artists of the Twentieth Century such as Ben Nicholson. His closest artistic relationship being with the painter John Wells.

He references the landscapes of the south west in his work, living as he does in the beautiful countryside of Wiltshire with vistas of hills and green from every window of his home, as well as acknowledging the ancient heritage of the region. It results in a freshness to Dannatt’s work, a joy in symmetry and asymmetry, in bold blocks of colour and abstracted geometry.
