ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Gillian Wise   b. 1936
< WORKS

Born in Ilford, Essex, Gillian Wise studied at Wimbledon School of Art from 1954 - 57. She first became involved with the British Constructionist Group through her interest in and correspondence with the American ‘Concretionist’ artist Charles Biederman who introduced her to Anthony Hill. As a result of this she met Victor Pasmore and Kenneth and Mary Martin during the period 1958 - 59. It was an important meeting, as a result of which she began exhibiting with the group, showing her work in 1960 in the Construction England exhibition at the Drian Galleries, London. Her first exhibition with Anthony Hill was at the I.C.A. in 1963 followed by a series of group Constructivist exhibitions including Constructivisme at the Galerie Dautzenberg, Paris, 1962 and Collage and Construction at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1962 and the 8th Tokyo Biennale, (British Constructivist Group) in 1965. She won as British Council postgraduate scholarship 1969 - 70. It is following this that Gillian Wise joined the Systems Group, exhibiting her work in the 1972 Systems exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. Her work is held in many public collections including: Tate, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Arts Council Permanent Collection, London. She lives and works in Paris.
