John Davies was born in Cheshire in 1946.
His first significant solo exhibition was held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, in 1972, followed by another at the same venue three years later. His sculpture and drawings have been included in many solo and group exhibitions in Britain, Europe, America, India, Australia and Japan. John Davies’ work is centred on the human figure and expressed in mixed media. In his early figures the subtle gestures of his silent single figures often indicated another presence or internal drama.
The body and head casts of the late sixties including figures such as Samuel Beckett, while bleak, were strong symbols of humanity. In his more recent clay and resin sculptures he has achieved a brighter, more lyrical sense of being.
Davies works in a dramatic range of scales from small pieces to giant heads. Finely delineated features are contained in each work, the detailed textures indicating character and feeling and other aspects of the human condition. His continual fascination with and exploration of the human form can be appreciated in these words:
My work has carried me closer to people - in a kind of circle. My sculpture seems to have that function for me. If it does the same for other people that would mean a great deal to me.
